Like A Rolling Stone

For this weeks blog I chose a song that I have never heard of. This song being Like A Rolling Stone by Bob Dylan. I am not going to lie when I first started listening to this song I was really really surprised. I guess I am so used to what “rock” music is now so I was expecting this song to be a lot different. The beat of this song is very upbeat and just a song that you can just sit and listen to. Another aspect of this song that was very interesting are the instruments used. So there is the basic guitar that is pretty common in almost every song. But there is also a couple different harmonica solos and they also include the keyboard in the background so there is quite a variety of different sounds in this song. After listening to the lyrics of the song I could see how this could be targeted more to the youth of the time. They lyrics are talking about “A rolling stone” this is a phrase used to describe people who seem to not have any direction in their life and they try to avo...

Eleanor Rigby

I chose this song for this week because I thought I would break out and do a song that I had never heard before. But then I listened to it and I immediately recognized it from its use in todays different media platforms. But this was my first time listening to it all the way through. I thought it was very interesting to listen to the lyrics of this song. It was probably some of the darkest lyrics that I have heard so far in this unit. But I think it is interesting to also listen to the instrumental behind the lyrics. Because for the most part it is just back ground music it is just back and forth beats until you get to the chorus and then it has more of an intense moment. In this moment the strings go down in tune and then return to the back ground playing. But at the chorus the instruments have their isolated moment when that is all you have. It is a combination of strings and it really makes the chorus strong. Because they lyrics are intense “Ah look at all the lonely people” a...

Week 5: Sh-Boom

So for this weeks blog I chose to write about Sh-Boom, the original by The Chords. I picked this song for this week because when we listened to it in class today I was just really happy to hear another song that I recognized. Also the fact that it was also involved in one of my favorite movies as a child would make it easy to write about. But before listening to it today I had only heard the main part of the chorus, so it was interesting to hear the different parts of the song. Like all of the scat singing, then when one of the singers sings in the really low tone. I think the style of scat in this version is a lot better than the second one. The first version it seems more light-filled and happy and the cover is more serious. Another aspect of the song that I had never heard before was the saxophone solo. After I heard it I thought it fit so well in the song and also the song is not the same without it. I personally think that the original of this song is a lot better than the c...

Eyy Yo Week 3: In the Mood

I actually really liked this song when I first heard it in class. I think this is because it was the first song I recognized in class. I immediately recognized it from one of my favorite movies when I was a kid, parent trap. I also really enjoyed listening to this song because it is just a happy beat and tune. There is a section in the middle song where it is just a straight trumpet solo. I have always loved the trumpet when it comes to jazz music. But in this solo the trumpet goes through various notes with multiple patterns it just adds to the happy tune of the music. The trumpet plays a big part in this song because they have the base of the song that repeats and then the trumpet always breaks it up. Then the song just keeps on repeating. I actually found it surprising that I like this song so much. I am used to songs where I can sing along to and jam out to. But with this song I still jam out to but it is a different type of jamming. But honestly this song is a 10/10 for me.
