Thrift Shop

So for the last blog of this class I decided to go out with a bang and what better way to do that then doing a song by Macklemore. I decided to do Thrift Shop by Macklemore and featuring Wanz. Ever since this song came out I have always loved it and thought it was funny. I love the beginning with the little kid asking if they can go thrift shopping and it just goes into him asking what on repeat for a couple seconds. Then the chorus is amazing to and it just makes you want to sing along. But then there is also a part where it just repeats “ I wear your grandads clothes and I look incredible” and I just love these lyrics I think they are funny and fun to sing along to. Also throughout the song they have different music that just adds to the music. They have a saxophone for the most part but then they had fun sounds like a cash register that adds to the fun aspect of this song. I also feel like it relates to a lot of kids because a lot of people prefer going to the thrift store rat...

Gone Country

For this weeks blog I chose a song that I wish I had listened to sooner in my life. I chose to listen to Gone Country by Alan Jackson. I have always liked country music and I have heard of Alan Jackson and couple of his songs but not this one. But I really liked this song because I felt like low key describes my small town. Because throughout all year no one dresses like they are from the country and then a rodeo comes a long and then it looks like they have “gone country”. I think it mostly relates to when he has the lyric “look at those boots” because everyone only pulls out their boots for one occasion and I am one of these people. But I feel like this song is really the country style that I am used to. It is not super twangy and western it is just a good in between. I also just feel like Gone Country is also just a good song to sing along to during the summer or really anytime. I would always recommend this song now after listening to it, or just any country song in that ca...

Thriller

For this weeks blog I chose an OG song that you know is a must to be played when it is halloween but honestly no matter what time of the year you can jam out to it. Thriller by Michael Jackson is hands down one of my favorite songs! The way it opens up is an amazing beginning because it is almost like the beginning of a movie or you feel like you are personally there. But that is how the whole song is set up. This song is set up to tell a story and it feels like you there experiencing it all. From the lyrics and also the back ground of this song. Michael Jackson in general is just an OG and you can always tell if it is him singing because he has a specific tone of voice and he also can hit the high notes that are almost like him just yelling. The main instrument in this song is the keyboard that really fits into the halloween feel of this song. Another thing that is added to this song that makes it stick out is the monologue at the end that is done by someone who is not Michael J...

Play That Funky Music

For this weeks blog I chose a song that holds many many memories to me. A song that was sung at the top of teenage girls on a volleyball bus on the way to their games. This song being Play that Funky Music by Wild Cherry. Play that Funky Music is such a fun song to sing a long too. Because the singer tends to draw out some of the lyrics so it makes it fun to exaggerate the same sound. Then everyone joins in on the prechorus and then chorus when it goes “Yeah, they were dancing and singing And moving to the grooving And just when it hit me Somebody turned around and shouted Play that funky music white boy play that funky music right”. There is not a better song to scream at the top of your lungs and to get hyped to before a volleyball game. But not only are the lyrics able to get you hyped but just the background music in general. Including a classic electric guitar solo and then back to the great lyrics. Which when you dive into the meaning of the lyrics it is about how everyone ...

Hotel California

For this weeks blog I chose a song I grew up listening to and this class was just able to remind me about it. The amount of memories I have listening to this song with my dad just as we would go on Sunday drives are endless. Hotel California is such a strong memory in my mind but it was not until now that I really listened to this song. As you listen to it you can really hear there is a negative view towards California. In the first verse of the song the person singing it states that “This could be Heaven or Hell”. This is really a bold statement to be making especially with the stereotype that California has around it. But other than the lyrics being interesting the song in general is. One thing that I did not realize was the long guitar solo at the end of the song that lasts the last two minutes of the song. I think this is interesting because as a listener I would get sick of this song at this point. It is not the length of the song that bothers me it is that it is straight ...

Like A Rolling Stone

For this weeks blog I chose a song that I have never heard of. This song being Like A Rolling Stone by Bob Dylan. I am not going to lie when I first started listening to this song I was really really surprised. I guess I am so used to what “rock” music is now so I was expecting this song to be a lot different. The beat of this song is very upbeat and just a song that you can just sit and listen to. Another aspect of this song that was very interesting are the instruments used. So there is the basic guitar that is pretty common in almost every song. But there is also a couple different harmonica solos and they also include the keyboard in the background so there is quite a variety of different sounds in this song. After listening to the lyrics of the song I could see how this could be targeted more to the youth of the time. They lyrics are talking about “A rolling stone” this is a phrase used to describe people who seem to not have any direction in their life and they try to avo...

Eleanor Rigby

I chose this song for this week because I thought I would break out and do a song that I had never heard before. But then I listened to it and I immediately recognized it from its use in todays different media platforms. But this was my first time listening to it all the way through. I thought it was very interesting to listen to the lyrics of this song. It was probably some of the darkest lyrics that I have heard so far in this unit. But I think it is interesting to also listen to the instrumental behind the lyrics. Because for the most part it is just back ground music it is just back and forth beats until you get to the chorus and then it has more of an intense moment. In this moment the strings go down in tune and then return to the back ground playing. But at the chorus the instruments have their isolated moment when that is all you have. It is a combination of strings and it really makes the chorus strong. Because they lyrics are intense “Ah look at all the lonely people” a...
